Hey, welcome to the podcast of Dutch Speaking Academy. My name is Mariska and as a Dutch teacher I believe learning a new language should be a fun and stress-free activity. That’s why I created these podcasts for you: to learn Dutch while you’re on the go. I also offer a four-day Instagram course for beginners: Kickstart your Dutch. Go check it out, but for now sit back and enjoy the ride. Doei doei.

Hey hey, welcome to our new lesson. Today’s lesson is about greetings. How to greet someone in Dutch? In this lesson I’ll give you a couple of options to greet someone in Dutch, I’ll teach you the textbook Dutch pronunciation and the real-life Dutch Pronunciation. Are you ready? Here we go.

Then, to wish someone a good morning would be: Goedemorgen. Goedemorgen. A good afternoon would be: Goedemiddag. Goedemiddag. And good evening: Goedeavond. Goedeavond. Goedemorgen, goedemiddag en goedeavond.

Now these sound straightforward, but when you’re in real life – into the wild – you might hear someone mumble: Goeiemoggah. This is goedemorgen in real life. Goeiemoggah. Yeah, are you trying? Goeiemoggah, or, goeiemiddag. Or goeieavond. So you hear the d from goeDe is replaced by an i: goeie. Or a j-sound even: goeje. All right, so far: goodmorning, good afternoon, good evening. Now we want to say: bye. Bye would be dag. Dag. Or: doei. Or: doeg. Or again, you can double it if you feel like it. Dag dag. Or doei doei. Or doeg doeg. Your choice.

Now, there are ways to say I’ll see you later, right? So we have hello, goodmorning, bye and now see you later. Repeat after me: tot zo. Tot zo. Or: tot straks. Tot straks. Both of them mean see you soon. But always within the same day, within a couple of hours. So, tot zo and tot straks are always used for seeing someone again within the same day.

If you’re unsure when you’ll see someone again, you can use tot ziens. Tot ziens. For example when you leave a shop, or when you leave someone and you literally don’t know when you’ll see someone again, you’ll say: tot ziens. Tot ziens. Or: tot later. See you later. Tot later. When it’s specific, maybe tomorrow you’ll see each other again, you say: tot morgen. Tot morgen. See you tomorrow.

Or: tot volgende week. See you next week. Tot volgende week. If you want to wish someone a happy day, you can say: fijne dag. Fijne dag. Meaning have a nice day, or literally: nice day. Fijne dag. A nice weekend would be: fijn weekend. Fijn weekend. Or: fijne avond. Remember avond? Avond is evening, we’ve heard this one at the beginning at goedeavond. This one is fijne avond. Have a nice evening. Fijne avond.

When someone says this to you, you go straight back with the: jij ook! Jij ook! You too. Jij ook. Or, when we want to be formal – we make a distinction between the formal form and the informal form “you” in Dutch (more about this later) – then we use the “u”. Literally a letter u. De u. U ook! So jij ook informal or U ook, formal.

That was it. So, are you ready to greet someone in Dutch? Let me know!

Give me a follow on my Instagram account @dutchspeakingacademy for more info about the Dutch language. See you soon. Tot ziens. Doei doei.
